In a recent presentation at the trimestral meeting of Eurelectric’s Network of Experts Islands Management System (NEIS), Lucija Rakocevic provided key insights into the ongoing study on connection policies and management of energy systems under conditions of non-synchronous generation in non-interconnected islands.

The presentation delved into the process, initial findings, and outlined the upcoming workshops of the study. Lucija Rakocevic, as a member of the Clean energy for EU islands secreariat, emphasided the significance of the study in enhancing the understanding of grid regulatory and operating constraints. The ultimate goal is to pave the way for increased adoption of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) technologies and foster sustainable decarbonisation.

The study identified ten distinct use case non-interconnected islands or groups of island systems, chosen to represent a diverse range of geographical, governance, and technological landscapes. These include:

  • Rhodes and Chalki islands, Greece
  • Kos-Kalymnos islands, Greece
  • Aeolian islands, Italy
  • Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote islands, Canary Islands, Spain, EU’s Outermost Regions
  • Terceira, Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge and Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, EU’s Outermost Regions
  • Madeira and Porto Santo, Portugal, EU’s Outermost Regions
  • Aruba, Netherlands, Oversees Countries and Territories
  • Bonaire, Netherlands, Oversees Countries and Tterritories
  • La Réunion, France, EU’s Outermost regions
  • French Polynesia archipelago, France, Oversees Countries and Territories

The study aims to offer best practice examples, recommendations, and guidance to overcome the identified challenges. Set to conclude by April 2024, the findings will be made public soon after. Additionally, in Spring and Summer 2024, the secretariat will organise and participate in public workshops and forums to disseminate recommendations and align with ongoing activities of other initiatives and associations.
