With an area of 158km², the island is commonly called the "Grande Galette" (big pancake) due to its circular shape and its low relief.
New Caledonia is a French territory made up of a group of islands and archipelagoes of Oceania, located in the Coral Sea and the South Pacific Ocean. It has a wide lagoon often considered "the most beautiful lagoon in the world". The territory is also distinguished by biodiversity of astonishing richness and originality: the rate of endemic species is the highest in the world.
Renewable energy to save money on the mainland and the island
Located in the western Aegean Sea, Sifnos is one of the islands comprising the circle of Cyclades. It features the traditional Cycladic architecture and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Even though Sifnos is a popular island, both amongst Greeks and foreigners, it has kept its originality avoiding the commercialisation many other islands have suffered.
Ilha da Culatra (Culatra Island) is a large sandy island located just south of the cities of Olhão and Faro in Portugal. The island is part of the Ria Formosa National Park and therefore has to follow strict rules for its development. There are no paved roads on Culatra - once you reach the island by ferry, you will get to know it by foot. The island is about 6 kilometres long, and its width ranges from 100 to 900 meters. Its 1000 inhabitants mainly live off fishing and shellfish culture.

The Cres & Losinj archipelago, situated in the Kvarner Gulf in Croatia, is the largest in the Adriatic Sea. In ancient times, the islands of Cres and Lošinj were one big island. But as the small strip of land between the two islands was the fastest way to cross this region by ship, the channel of Osor was excavated during the Roman period to shorten the path to the open sea.
The Isle of Eigg is one of the Inner Hebridean Islands. About five miles long by three miles wide, Eigg lies 10 miles off the Scottish Mainland West coast, South of the Isle of Skye. The island has a fascinating history, superb wildlife and a vibrant community. Eigg is owned by the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust who have managed it on behalf of the community since the community buyout of 1997. The Trust has responsibility for stewardship of the island, its buildings and natural heritage, and for supporting future development.
